SEO and AI visibility for consulting firms

In short

Most consulting work still starts with a referral, and then the buyer checks. Forrester's 2026 study of nearly 18,000 business buyers found that 94% use AI during their buying process (published 2026-01-21). In a Semrush survey of 622 US B2B professionals, agencies and service providers topped the list of what they research with AI, at 51% (a vendor survey, published 2026-07-08).

SEO for consulting firms now has two readers: the buyer who searches Google, and the AI assistant that reads your site before it answers that buyer. This page shows what ChatGPT told Toronto buyers about consulting firms in September 2026, and what we do about it for firms of 5 to 200 people.

Toronto, 2026-09-24

What ChatGPT answered about consulting in Toronto.

On 2026-09-24 we asked ChatGPT five questions a buyer in Toronto might ask about operations and management consulting. We asked each one three times, with the location set to Toronto. The 15 answers named 60 firms. No firm was named in every answer. Deloitte, MNP and The Poirier Group came up most, in 7 of the 15 each.

The question decided who got named

Asked for the best management consulting firms in Toronto for mid-sized companies, ChatGPT named 21 firms, among them the Big Four, McKinsey, BCG and Bain. Asked which Toronto strategy consultants take on companies with fewer than 200 employees, it named 15 firms, and none of them was a national or global firm.

Small firms were cited from pages written for that buyer

Among the pages cited in all three answers to the small-company question were two written for that buyer: Action Strategies' “How a Small Toronto Business Strategy Consultant Can Transform Your Growth” and RK Fischer & Associates' “Small Business Consulting”. Clutch pages were cited in two of the three. Across the whole line, 93% of the sites the answers cited were the named firms' own websites, counting each site once per answer.

Who AI names, our monthly index, publishes the full edition from 27 October 2026, with every firm named and every page cited.

For 5 to 200 people

A boutique's opening is in the specific question.

In this capture, the broad question went mostly to national and global names. The question sized for companies under 200 employees went entirely to smaller firms. A boutique's opening is in questions like that one: a company size, an industry, a specific problem, a cost.

So the work is specific:

  • A page for each situation you serve, written for the buyer in it, with facts an answer can quote: the kind of client, the problem, what changed and how long it took.
  • Your partners' knowledge on the page. We build one long piece a month from a 30-minute interview with one of your partners, and the partner signs it off.
  • One description of the firm wherever buyers look: your site, LinkedIn, Clutch and the directories in your field.
  • Google beside the assistants. Every capture also checks Google for each question's short search, and we track the terms we agree with you.

Each month

We measure, then we write and fix, then we measure again.

A month holds:

  • four new or improved pages;
  • one long piece built on a 30-minute interview with one of your partners, published only with your sign-off;
  • four listing or pitch requests, each reported with its outcome (a placement counts only once it is published, and we buy none);
  • the capture of your agreed questions and the positions of your agreed terms, location set to your city;
  • a technical check of crawling, index status and AI-crawler access, with every fix listed and dated;
  • a dated report, and a 30-minute call with the founder each week.

In the first 14 days we also add a “Where did you first hear of us?” field to your contact form, with each AI assistant listed, so your report can count inquiries by source.

A Toronto consultancy

Ask ChatGPT who markets nurse injectors in Toronto. It names The Kay Media first.

Vanessa Kay runs The Kay Media, a marketing consultancy for aesthetic clinics, from Toronto. The Moroccan developers she already worked with told her Morocco had good SEO agencies; she then found us through Google and ChatGPT, and signed with Maroc SEO in July 2026.

On 2026-09-25 we asked ChatGPT five questions her clients ask, three times each, with web search on. All 15 answers named The Kay Media first, and all 15 cited her site. The work, dated:

2026-07-16
The day we started, her site was down. We had it back up that day.
2026-07-17
We cleaned a live compromise (a rogue admin account, a gambling post, two malicious cron jobs and 498 dropper files, with eight security keys rotated and 7,763 PHP files swept) and sent her the report the same day. We cleaned two more compromises on 2026-07-20.
2026-07-29
4 of her 10 contract terms on the first page of Google Canada. Two days later, 7.
2026-09-22
8 of the 10 on the first page, five at #1, captured with the location set to Toronto, 54 days before the contract's deadline.
By 2026-09-24
33 articles, 6 commercial pages, a pillar guide, a budget calculator and a rebuilt homepage in ten weeks, and 42 dated reports sent between 2026-07-17 and 2026-09-23.

On the topics her buyers search, her average Google position went from 63.4 to 31.1, comparing the same 28 days a year apart.

Questions

Is SEO still worth it for a consulting firm?

When your buyers search for what you do, yes. So we check before you sign: every term we propose comes with its search volume, your position and who holds page one that day, and you approve the list.

We get our clients through referrals. Why does search matter?

Referred buyers check before they call. What Google and ChatGPT say about your firm is part of that check, and you can see it before they do.

Do you only work with Toronto firms?

No. We work with firms anywhere in Canada and the US, and set the location to your city for every capture. We work in English and French.

What do you need from us?

Access to your Search Console, 30 minutes a month with one partner for the interview, and sign-off on what goes out under the firm's name.
